Wrinkle reduction with BOTOX®
Anti-wrinkle injections are composed of a natural purified protein called botulinum toxin type A.
Botulinum toxin can be used to treat all wrinkles resulting from normal facial movement. When it is injected into a specific muscle in the face it blocks the signals from the nerves to the muscle. This means that the nerve ending cannot tell the muscle to move, hence there will be less wrinkling of the skin in the areas treated. It in effect causes the muscle to hibernate. This relaxing of the muscle reduces dynamic lines in the face leading to a softer natural looking appearance.
Therefore anti wrinkle treatments are usually aimed at eliminating and softening lines caused by muscle movement rather than lines present at rest. Static lines can be treated but usually by enhancing their volume with Dermal fillers.
The upper third of the face is where the best treatment results are obtained, commonly for the reduction in crows feet around the eyes, wrinkles on the forehead and between the eyebrows. Depending on the area treated, dose used, and how you respond, repeat treatments will be required around every 3-5 months.
Botulinum toxin does not remove wrinkles indefinitely; it is usually necessary to have retreatment every 3-5 months to maintain and improve upon the original results. It has been proven to be quite safe to have botulinum toxin injections at the above frequency over a period of years.
After a while, most patients will notice that the lines and wrinkles around their treated areas will continue to become less deep and pronounced. Hence, it appears to be smoother on the surface because it has not been creased by constant muscle activity. This is because the Botulinum toxin allows the skin to recover as it is not continually stretched and creased.
BOTOX® is most commonly used for the reduction of frown lines (commonly known as glabella), forehead lines, and smile lines at the corners of the eyes (crows feet).
Other common uses are to produce eyebrow lift, this is known as a chemical brow lift, and we can also use BOTOX® under the eyes’ on occasions to create a more open eyed appearance.
Treatment itself takes only a short time and involves a series of tiny injections into the treated areas. The needles are very fine and are the same as used daily by diabetics.
There is minimal discomfort, and the majority of patients find this procedure very straightforward. On occasions we use a numbing cream on the skin before the process but this is rarely necessary.
The effects of BOTOX® are not immediate, but usually take between two and five days to become visible and sometimes this can be up to ten days.
BOTOX® treatments last on average up to four months, but is dependent upon the dose used and also the activity of the muscles treated.
Initially at Bath Spa Beauty we are very conservative in the initial treatments and believe that it is much easier to top up after a short period of time.
Response to treatment varies greatly for those who have not had BOTOX® treatment before, so therefore we are happy to see you again if necessary. We find that after a number of treatments the interval between injections becomes longer as the muscles weaken and the habit of the muscle activity is reduced.
After the effects of BOTOX® have worn off the muscles return to normal and the skin surface is not changed in any way.
There are three main areas that can be treated with anti wrinkle injections.
Area 1: just above and between the eyebrows known as the glabella
Area 2: the forehead
Area 3: the crows feet or smile lines at the side of the eyes
The glabella and crows feet can be treated in isolation, at the cost of a single area. However, for best and most predictable results, the forehead requires the glabella to be treated as well which means that treating the forehead is at the fee schedule of a two area treatment.
