Mouth Cancer Awareness
09 Nov 2015
November is Mouth Cancer Action Month a charity campaign which aims to raise awareness of mouth cancer. In the UK, more than 6,700 people were diagnosed with mouth cancer last year. The disease has grown by a third in the last decade and takes the lives of more than 2,000 people each year in the UK. This is more than testicular and cervical cancer combined.
Mouth cancer is highly dependent on early detection, with many cases only being discovered when its too late. If it is caught early, the chances of surviving mouth cancer are nine out of ten.
Mouth cancer can strike in a number of places, including the lips, tongue, gums and cheek, and it’s extremely important to know what to look out for.
If you have any of these symptoms:-
- Ulcers which do not heal in three weeks
- Red and white patches in the mouth
- Unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth or head and neck area
Tell your dentist or doctor immediately. If in doubt, get checked out.
At Bath Spa Dentistry, we routinely screen for Mouth Cancer and use a special piece of equipment called a VELscope® Vx Scanner, which allows us to examine and screen for tissue abnormalities, potentially leading to the earlier visualisation of precancer, cancer or other disease processes.
And you don’t have to wait until November each year to be mouth aware. By visiting your dentist regularly we can help you detect problems before you become aware of them.
Book in to see one of the team today, when was the last time your mouth checked out?
