Official Dentistry Partner to Bath Rugby
Last year we were proud to announce a new partnership with Bath Rugby and become their Official Dentistry Partner.
We also became the shirt sponsor for England prop Henry Thomas, former King Edward’s School pupil, who joined Bath Rugby at the start of the 2014 season.
The partnership was kicked off by carrying out oral health and dental screening for the Bath Rugby squad; this was to ensure that the players had optimal dental health.
With the margins in professional sport as small as they are, dental fitness with good oral hygiene is as important for rugby players as they are for everyone else.
To mark the partnership, throughout 2015 there will be special rugby related events taking place at Bath Spa Dentistry, including a player appearance by Henry Thomas and a charity raffle to win a signed rugby ball, with proceeds going to the Bath Rugby Foundation.
One of our dentists, Sandra Mas Sanchis carried out the Oral Screening at Farleigh House, the Bath Rugby team’s headquarters.
Sandra joined the dental team at Bath Spa Dentistry in 2014 after working in private practices in Spain and continuing her postgraduate education in endodontics (root canal treatment). Sandra also has a special interest in cosmetic dentistry and periodontology (gum disease treatment).
Sandra’s focus is on providing a high level of care to all her patients and loves to make her patients feel comfortable and relaxed during her treatments and welcomes new patients to register with her at Bath Spa Dentistry.
Leading the way in Oral Health Screening
When you visit for your regular dental examination and hygienist appointments together, these will now be carried out as an Oral Health Screening Session.
You will stay seated in the dental chair and the hygienist and dentist will come to you, rather than you having to swap surgeries to see different people. You will save time and have a more relaxed experience in the surgery. Evidence has shown that this way of performing Oral Health Screening improves clinical diagnosis, patient satisfaction and cohesion within the dental practice.
We will continue to check for decay gum disease and problems, including attention to gums, bone, lips, cheeks, tongue, teeth, glands and any restorations. X-rays will be taken if appropriate and you will be routinely screened for oral cancer.
Bath Spa Dentistry is one of the first dental practices in Bath to offer this service, and are pleased to offer this to everyone who attends the practice for their regular dental care.
Nichola Tong (who previously worked for Dermot for 8 years) came back to work at Bath Spa Dentistry at the end of 2013.
Whilst she was away, Nicki worked with periodontists (gum specialists) and increased her skills in gum disease management and also the care of anxious patients.
You may have also have noticed a change in ‘Team Hygiene’ – Sarah Whitley, went on maternity leave at the end of last year and is expecting her first child early this year. Nicki will be heading up the team and will be helping us to welcome Hygienist Jessica Seton as Sarah’s maternity leave cover.
Jess graduated from Cardiff dental school with a first class honours degree in dental hygiene & therapy.
VELScope® Enhanced Oral Assessment System
The dental profession strives to raise awareness of Mouth Cancer, through campaigns such as Mouth Cancer Action Month every November.
Last year as part of the campaign, we offered free checks for the early stages of oral cancer, using the latest VELscope® technology.
The VELscope® system is a handheld, wireless scanner which uses blue light to detect tissue abnormalities before they can be seen by the naked eye. The examination takes less than 5 minutes and is pain free.
Mouth cancer has grown by a third in the last decade – and remains one of very few cancers which are predicted to increase further in the coming years.
Although there are risk factors heavily linked to the disease, mouth cancer can affect anybody, that is why it is so important that we all know what to look out for. Any of the three symptoms below could be the sign of Mouth Cancer.
- An ulcer that does not heal within 3 weeks
- An unusual lump or swelling
- Red and/or white patches in your mouth
Existing patients of Bath Spa Dentistry will receive an examination with the VELscope® scanner as part of their Oral Health Screening Session.
However, if anyone is worried about any abnormalities in their mouth, please get in touch, sooner rather than later. If in doubt, get it checked out.
Dermot McNulty has a reputation as one of the most experienced and respected Implant Dentists in the UK. He has been practicing Implant Dentistry since 1987 and opened Bath Spa Dentistry in 2003 with the specific aim of providing advanced restorative and Implant Dentistry.
He embarked on an extensive postgraduate education in Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry learning from some of the finest Dental Clinicians all over the world.
Dermot became the first dentist in the West of England to complete the Diploma in Implant Dentistry in 2005 and has since become a Lecturer, Examiner and Cohort Director of this prestigious course run at the Royal College of Surgeons, London, with parallel programmes in Leeds, Hong Kong and Germany and has continued to attend conferences all over the world.
In addition to Course Director in London, Practice Owner and Clinical Director at Bath Spa Dentistry, Dermot has also run his own training courses at the practice since 2009.
The courses are for dentists and their teams who travel from all over the country to learn about advanced and implant dentistry.
The courses take place on Friday’s and Dermot will be continuing with the training throughout 2015.
We can now offer some dental implant treatment from only £1,995.00, which includes the dental implant, abutment (post) and final crown when this is completed and delivered by Dermot McNulty.
Bath Spa Dentistry is at the forefront of implant dentistry both in the UK and abroad. We invest in the most advanced diagnostic equipment and latest technologies (such as our 3D X-ray Cone Beam CT Scanner) to make treatment both safe and predictable.
As we carry out so much implant dentistry we can keep our costs low and are confident that the prices compare with those of other implant dentists locally and nationally.
We plan each case individually and before treatment, patients receive individual treatment proposal costings so that any dental solution is tailor made for each individual.
Although the investment in fixed implant supported teeth may seem high, the benefits are life changing and long lasting. When we give you the choice between a single implant or a 3-unit bridge, we know both solutions have a high probability of success, but we advise that a dental implant is the better solution.
When a tooth is replaced with a 3-unit bridge, we have to cut down the teeth either side of the gap to place 3 crowns fused together, rather than just 1 implant being placed into the gap.
If 1 of the teeth decays, it is likely that the bridge will have to be replaced fully. A 3-unit bridge has an average life span of around 10 years, whereas dental implants have the longest track record of any other restoration in dentistry. Dental implants are designed to last a lifetime.
It is worth investing that little extra to have a dental implant, and with the competitive pricing on offer at the moment, now has never been a better time to get an implant.
Bath Life Awards Finalists 2014
Last year for the first time we entered the Bath Life Awards and were delighted to be shortlisted as a finalist the ‘Health’ Category. Dermot and some of the team had a very enjoyable evening at the Awards Ceremony and met many other Bath based businesses.
Although we unfortunately did not win our category, we have already submitted our entry for 2015, and will keep you posted with any news.
